CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

I reached for the phone on my desk, only paying enough attention to lift the receiver before I continued to read the testimony in front of me that was clearly given by a fool. “Yes, Marcy?” I asked absently.

“The sheriff from Everdale is on the phone. Can I put him through? Or do you want me to ask him to call you back?” Marcy asked all business.

I sucked in a sharp breath willing the flutter of panic to take a hike, my full attention now on the call. “Put him through.” We’d been waiting on the court report to see whether Wilf was fit to stand trial for what he’d done to Delilah.

“Layla, I’m sorry to bother you. But I’ve been unable to reach Delilah,” Sheriff McNally said, getting straight to the point. It was something I liked about him, even when I hated the badge he wore.

“She’s out of town with Dallas. They’ve gone to get some of the replacement items that got burned in the fire. She’s probably switched her cell phone to silent. She does that on occasion. Can I help?”

“I really wanted to talk to her.”

“If it’s important, you can talk to me, she’s already given you permission to speak to me,” I reminded him.

“Yes, the thing is, this isn’t all directly connected to the case. Firstly Wilf has been assessed as unable to stand trial. I’m sure Delilah’s lawyer will fill her in. I’m sorry. The other reason I’m calling is…”

“Yes,” I prompted, starting to get an odd itch at the center of my shoulder blades.

“It’s…when we were searching the database to see if we could connect Wilf to any other crimes, information about the case was input. A sheriff requested more information, which in itself isn’t uncommon. One of my deputies sent pictures of the scene, Wilf, and Delilah to their office.”

My heart thudded painfully against my ribs.

Please, no. No, not now!

“A sheriff from Riley reached out and has been askin’ questions, not about the case but more about Delilah. This was when the deputy mentioned it to me because he thought it was odd that the Riley sheriff wanted details of the victim rather than the assailant, who we were still looking for at the time.”

How long has he known what town we lived in?

How long?

I got up so fast that the room spun around me. The air felt too thick to swallow, with a tight band forming and restricting my chest. There was a buzzing sound before the room tilted and disappeared before my eyes as the blackness took me.
